Although many presume exhaust systems are nothing more than a way to minimize engine noise, they’re actually responsible for significantly more. First of all, your exhaust system facilitates the after-treatment process in which your engine’s diesel fumes are filtered, collected, or burned off in an effort to protect our natural environment. Secondly, your exhaust system is also designed to funnel harmful emissions away from your passenger compartment so you and your passengers don’t inhale harmful carcinogens. A poorly maintained exhaust system won’t accomplish these critical tasks and, as such, proper maintenance is a necessity.
The Aftertreatment Process
The after-treatment process entails the collection, filtering, or burning off of harmful emissions from your diesel engine. Your truck’s after-treatment components are directly integrated into your exhaust tubing, meaning all of the fumes created by your truck must go through them before exiting into our atmosphere. Common after-treatment components and processes include your Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), your SCR Catalyst, your DOC Catalyst, and your Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system.
